01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Fast Bordeaux GP Base is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Fast Bordeaux GP Base (4-methoxy-2-nitroaniline) follows the naming convention of the azoic diazo base trade: a colour reference ("Bordeaux"), a supplier or grade code ("GP"), and "Base" signalling that this is the free-amine form sold to be diazotised by the dyehouse itself, rather than a pre-made, less stable diazonium salt. Unlike "2B Acid" elsewhere in this part of our range, this identification carries no meaningful ambiguity — every independent source we checked, including the Colour Index generic name "CI Azoic Diazo Component 1," agrees exactly on CAS 96-96-8.

In use, the dyehouse diazotises this base on-site with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid, then applies the resulting diazonium salt to cotton fabric that has already been padded with a Naphthol AS-type coupling component. The two react directly within the fibre to form an insoluble azo pigment — the classic "ice colour" or azoic dyeing process, valued for its wash- and light-fastness on cotton. We want to be honest that we could not confirm, in the sources checked, the exact Naphthol AS coupling partner or precise resulting shade documented for this specific base — azoic dyeing combination tables (Colour Index cross-reference charts) are the authoritative source for that pairing, and we'd recommend consulting one directly, or your dyehouse's own established recipe, rather than relying on a shade description from us.

Where it fits in the synthesis chain

We supply the free-base diazo component itself, for diazotisation at the dyehouse. We do not supply pre-diazotised material, Naphthol AS coupling components, or finished dyed fabric.

Grades we supply

98%+ is the standard dyehouse grade; isomeric and residual-nitro-compound purity matters for consistent diazotisation behaviour and shade reproducibility batch to batch.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Fast Bordeaux GP Base is made

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Fast Bordeaux GP Base is made by nitration of p-anisidine (4-methoxyaniline), installing the nitro group at the position ortho to the amine, or alternatively by methoxylation of an appropriately nitrated chloroaniline precursor.

The nitration step requires careful temperature control to favour the correct regiochemistry and to limit over-nitration or oxidative by-products, since the base's diazotisation behaviour and the resulting dye's shade depend on a clean, single substitution pattern.

The crude product is purified by crystallisation and dried to the free-base solid traded commercially — importantly, as the stable amine, not as a diazonium salt, which would be far less stable to store and ship.

Why this is sold as the "base," not a ready-to-use diazonium salt

Diazonium salts are inherently less stable than the amines they're made from, and many decompose or lose potency on storage, especially in a warm climate. The azoic dyeing trade's standard practice — and ours — is to supply the stable free-base amine, which the dyehouse diazotises fresh, immediately before use, with sodium nitrite and acid under controlled cold conditions. This is why "Base" appears in the trade name: it tells the buyer what form they're receiving and what step they still need to perform before dyeing.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Fast Bordeaux GP Base is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Azoic (Ice-Colour) Dyeing on Cotton

Diazotised on-site and coupled onto cotton pre-padded with a Naphthol AS-type component, depositing an insoluble, wash- and light-fast azo pigment directly in the fibre.

Field 02

Azo Pigment & Dye Intermediate Chemistry

Used more broadly as a substituted aniline building block wherever this specific nitro/methoxy substitution pattern is required.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the molecule is typically carried forward

Fast Bordeaux GP Base's chemistry is built entirely around its amino group: diazotised fresh at the point of use, then coupled to build the azo chromophore that gives the dyed fabric its colour.

Diazotisation

Sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid, under cold, controlled conditions, convert the amino group to a diazonium salt — performed by the dyehouse immediately before use, not by us.

Azo coupling onto Naphthol AS

The freshly generated diazonium salt couples with a Naphthol AS-type component pre-applied to the cotton fibre, forming an insoluble azo pigment directly within the fabric.

Why the nitro and methoxy groups stay untouched

Unlike the amino group, the nitro and methoxy substituents are not involved in the coupling reaction itself — they remain in the final azo structure and influence its shade and fastness properties rather than reacting further.

05 / FAMILY COMPARISON

Signal word

Danger

No harmonised EU CLP Annex VI entry was located for this substance. The classification above translates an older EU risk-phrase (DSD) self-classification — R26/27/28 (very toxic by inhalation/skin/ingestion), R33 (danger of cumulative effects), R52/53 (harmful to aquatic organisms, may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment) — into the nearest modern H-code equivalents for readability; this translation is approximate, not an independently confirmed current GHS classification, so check the SDS shipped with your specific lot. It is also transport-classified as UN 2811, Class 6.1, Packing Group II (toxic solid). IARC has not evaluated this substance.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

03What purity grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply technical grade and high-purity grade — the exact figures are shown in the specification rail at the top of this page. Each batch ships with a certificate of analysis stating assay, isomer purity and moisture against the agreed specification.
04Is Fast Bordeaux GP Base hazardous?+
Yes. It carries the GHS signal word Danger with the hazard statements listed in the hazard section of this page. It should be handled with appropriate PPE and in line with the safety data sheet supplied with each shipment.
05Do you supply this already diazotised and ready to use?+
No — we supply the stable free-base amine. Diazonium salts are considerably less stable to store, especially in a warm climate, so standard azoic dyeing practice is for the dyehouse to diazotise this base fresh, under cold, controlled conditions, immediately before use.
06What shade does this produce, and which Naphthol AS component should I pair it with?+
We're being honest that we could not confirm the exact documented coupling partner or resulting shade for this specific base in the sources we checked. We'd recommend consulting a Colour Index azoic combination chart or your dyehouse's own established recipe for that specific pairing, rather than relying on a shade claim from us.
07Why is this called a "Base" rather than an "Acid" like the other two products in this group?+
"Base" and "Acid" in this part of the dye trade refer to different roles, not different stability or quality tiers. This product is the free-amine diazo component used in direct azoic dyeing on cotton fibre; 2B Acid and 4B Acid are aminosulfonic acids used in a related but distinct pigment-lake manufacturing process.
08What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg bags, with drums / jumbo bags available for bulk orders. Trial quantities from a single drum can usually be arranged before you commit to larger volumes.

10Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
11How is Fast Bordeaux GP Base manufactured?+
p-Anisidine (4-methoxyaniline) Nitration of p-anisidine to install the nitro group ortho to the amine is the usual industrial route, followed by washing and distillation or recrystallisation before packing.
12What is the shelf life, and how should it be stored?+
Typical shelf life is around 24 months in original, unopened packaging stored as described in the storage section of this page. If a batch is held beyond its shelf life, we recommend re-checking assay and moisture before use.
