2,6-Diisopropylaniline
A bulky, sterically shielded aniline supplied by Chelora Chemicals as a ligand precursor for organometallic catalysis and as a general agrochemical and dye-trade intermediate — exported from Indonesia with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What 2,6-Diisopropylaniline is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the compound's chemistry, its place in the aniline-derivative family, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
2,6-Diisopropylaniline carries an isopropyl group on each position beside the amino group — bulkier than the ethyl pattern of its sibling in this family, and bulky enough that the compound's real commercial value lies less in conventional herbicide synthesis and more in coordination chemistry, where that steric shield is exactly what certain ligand designs call for.
It is a liquid at ambient temperature across any normal handling range, freezing only at −45 °C, so it carries none of the cold-weather handling concerns its 2,6-diethyl sibling brings. Fresh material is colourless to pale yellow, and some lots discolour toward brown on standing. It is poorly soluble in water, consistent with the extra steric bulk and higher log P of 3.18, and dissolves readily in common organic solvents.
Where it fits in the synthesis chain
We want to be precise about this compound's real uses rather than repeat a common mix-up: 2,6-diisopropylaniline is sometimes assumed to be the amine precursor for the herbicide dimethenamid, but dimethenamid is in fact built from a substituted thiophene amine, a structurally unrelated starting material. What is well documented is this compound's role as a sterically demanding amine building block in organometallic and catalysis chemistry — it is a standard precursor for N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, β-diketiminate ("NacNac") ligands and 2,6-pyridinediimine ligands used in olefin-polymerisation and other catalyst systems — alongside general use as a dye-industry and agrochemical-synthesis intermediate.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers 2,6-Diisopropylaniline in technical grade (98%) and high-purity grade (99%+), both with a batch-wise certificate of analysis. Because ligand synthesis chemistry is typically run at smaller scale and with tighter purity requirements than bulk herbicide manufacture, tell our desk your intended use at enquiry and we will quote the grade and documentation that suits it.
How 2,6-Diisopropylaniline is made
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
2,6-Diisopropylaniline is made by the same family of industrial process as 2,6-diethylaniline: catalytic ortho-dialkylation of aniline, here with propylene rather than ethylene, run under pressure over a solid acid catalyst such as alumina or silica-alumina. The amino group directs both isopropyl substituents cleanly to the two ortho positions.
Building the molecule this way, from aniline outward, avoids the isomer-separation difficulty that a nitration-based route to the equivalent diisopropylbenzene would create. It is the dominant and most economical commercial process for this compound.
After alkylation the crude amine is washed and distilled to remove unreacted aniline, mono-alkylated by-product and catalyst residues, with the distillation cut setting the divide between technical and high-purity grade.
A bulkier shield than its diethyl sibling
The isopropyl group is a meaningfully larger substituent than ethyl, and that extra bulk is the entire point of this compound commercially. It is why ligand chemists reach for this aniline rather than the diethyl version when a reaction centre needs more complete steric protection — and it is also why, unlike 2,6-diethylaniline, this grade has not found a comparable role as a direct herbicide-amine precursor; the bulk that makes it valuable in catalysis does not map onto an established chloroacetanilide route.
Industries and processes that use it
2,6-Diisopropylaniline is consumed almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The four fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligands
A standard precursor for NHC ligands used widely in organometallic catalysis, where the bulky 2,6-diisopropyl shield controls the metal centre's reactivity and selectivity.
β-Diketiminate (NacNac) Ligands
Condensed with 1,3-diketones to build NacNac ligands, used in a range of coordination chemistry and catalysis applications.
Diiminopyridine Ligands
A building block for 2,6-pyridinediimine ligand systems used in some olefin-polymerisation catalysts.
Dye & Agrochemical Intermediates
Used more generally as a sterically hindered aniline intermediate in dye-industry and agrochemical synthesis.
How the molecule is typically carried forward
The reactions below are the ones that put this compound's steric bulk to use — building nitrogen-donor ligands rather than running through the diazotization and acylation chemistry common elsewhere in our aniline range.
Imine Condensation
Condensation with an aldehyde or ketone gives the imine, the entry point to most of this compound's ligand chemistry.
NacNac Formation
Condensation with a 1,3-diketone such as acetylacetone, followed by deprotonation, gives the β-diketiminate (NacNac) ligand framework.
Diiminopyridine Formation
Double condensation with 2,6-diacetylpyridine builds the diiminopyridine ligand used in certain polymerisation catalyst systems.
Acylation
Reaction with an acid chloride or anhydride gives the sterically hindered anilide, used in general fine-chemical synthesis.
2,6-Diisopropylaniline against its near relatives
The three 2,6-dialkylaniline building blocks we supply share a design principle — a symmetric steric shield around the amine — but feed very different downstream chemistry. The table below is the quick orientation.
| Product | CAS Number | Typically Used In | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide rather than a specification sheet.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Causes serious eye irritation.
Harmful to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.
Warning — GHS07 harmful pictogram applies.
This substance has no harmonised entry in Annex VI to CLP; the classification above reflects registrant self-classification under REACH. It carries no carcinogen, mutagen or acute toxicity classification in the sources we reviewed — a notably milder profile than most of the anilines in our range. Handle with the standard precautions for an aromatic amine: gloves, eye protection and adequate ventilation, and avoid release to waterways given the aquatic toxicity endpoint.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, protected from light, in tightly closed original containers away from oxidizers and strong acids. With a freezing point of −45 °C this product carries no cold-weather solidification risk under any normal storage or transit condition. It will discolour gradually from colourless towards pale yellow or brown on standing; this is a cosmetic change and does not by itself indicate loss of assay.
