01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What Chlorosulfonic Acid is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the reagent's unusual dual-acid chemistry, why it is prized for introducing the sulfonyl chloride group directly, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

Chlorosulfonic Acid can be thought of structurally as sulfuric acid with one of its two hydroxyl groups replaced by a chlorine atom, which gives the molecule a genuinely dual character: it is simultaneously a powerful sulfonating agent, like its parent sulfuric acid and the oleum grades elsewhere in our catalogue, and a reactive acid chloride capable of converting a substrate directly to a sulfonyl chloride in a single step, without the separate sulfonation-then-chlorination sequence that would otherwise be needed. That one-step sulfonyl chloride introduction is the reagent's single most valuable capability and the reason it occupies a specific, hard-to-substitute role in several major chemical value chains.

At room temperature it is a colourless to pale yellow liquid that fumes very heavily in moist air, among the most aggressively fuming of the reactive acid reagents in our range, releasing both hydrogen chloride and sulfuric acid mist on contact with atmospheric moisture. It reacts with water considerably more violently than most other acid chlorides given the combined reactivity of its two acidic functionalities.

Where it fits in the value chain

Chlorosulfonic Acid's largest industrial use is in the production of sulfonyl chloride intermediates for dye, pigment and pharmaceutical synthesis, and, closely related to our own Linear Alkyl Benzene product, in certain sulfonation routes relevant to detergent and surfactant intermediate manufacture, where its combined sulfonating/chlorinating reactivity can be exploited depending on the specific target molecule. It is also used to introduce sulfonamide groups (via subsequent reaction of the sulfonyl chloride intermediate with an amine) in pharmaceutical and agrochemical active-ingredient synthesis, including in the manufacture of certain sulfonamide-class drugs and herbicides.

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How Chlorosulfonic Acid is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

Chlorosulfonic Acid is produced industrially by reacting sulphur trioxide with hydrogen chloride gas, which combine directly to form the mixed acid chloride/sulfonic acid product in a single addition step; an alternative older route reacts chlorosulfonic acid's own precursor chemistry from sulfuric acid and a chlorinating agent such as phosphorus pentachloride, though the direct SO3/HCl combination route is the dominant modern commercial process given its simpler feedstock requirements and cleaner by-product profile.

Because both the reaction itself and the finished product are extremely reactive toward moisture, the entire production process, from reaction through to finishing and packaging, is run under rigorously controlled, moisture-excluded conditions, with the product transferred directly into the specialist lined packaging it ships in. Purification, where needed, is carried out by careful fractional distillation given the compound's thermal sensitivity.

03 / APPLICATIONS

Industries and processes that use it

Chlorosulfonic Acid is consumed across dye/pigment sulfonyl chloride synthesis, pharmaceutical sulfonamide manufacture and select detergent-intermediate sulfonation chemistry. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.

Field 01

Sulfonyl Chloride Intermediate Synthesis

Reacts directly with an aromatic or other organic substrate to introduce a sulfonyl chloride group in a single step, a key intermediate for dye, pigment and pharmaceutical synthesis.

Field 02

Pharmaceutical Sulfonamide Manufacture

The sulfonyl chloride intermediate formed in the first reaction step is further reacted with an amine to form a sulfonamide, a functional group found in numerous pharmaceutical active ingredients.

Field 03

Agrochemical Sulfonamide/Sulfonylurea Synthesis

Used in the manufacture of certain sulfonamide- and sulfonylurea-class herbicide and agrochemical active ingredients, exploiting the same sulfonyl chloride chemistry.

Field 04

Detergent & Surfactant Intermediate Chemistry

Used in select sulfonation routes relevant to detergent and surfactant intermediate manufacture, depending on the specific target molecule's chemistry.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the reagent is typically used forward

The reagent's unique dual sulfonating/chlorinating reactivity governs almost all of Chlorosulfonic Acid's further use. The categories below account for most of the ways it is applied in downstream synthesis.

Direct Sulfonyl Chloride Formation (Aromatic Substrates)

Reacted with an aromatic ring under electrophilic substitution-like conditions, chlorosulfonic acid introduces a sulfonyl chloride group directly, combining what would otherwise be two separate sulfonation and chlorination steps into one.

Sulfonamide Formation (Downstream Step)

The sulfonyl chloride intermediate formed in the previous step is reacted with a primary or secondary amine, typically with a base present to scavenge the released hydrogen chloride, to form the sulfonamide bond.

Sulfonic Acid Ester Formation

Reacted with an alcohol to form a sulfonate ester, a useful activated intermediate for subsequent substitution reactions in specialty synthesis.

Controlled Partial Hydrolysis

Under carefully controlled conditions, can be partially hydrolysed to generate a sulfonic acid directly, though this is a less common use than its sulfonyl chloride-forming chemistry.
