Ethyl Chloroformate
The Ethyl Chloroformate supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a widely used acylating reagent for carbamate, ester and mixed-anhydride chemistry — exported from Indonesia in moisture-proof packaging with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Ethyl Chloroformate is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the reagent's chloroformate chemistry, why it is valued for mild, selective acylation, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Ethyl Chloroformate occupies a reactivity niche between a simple acid chloride and a milder carbonate ester: its carbon-chlorine bond is reactive enough to acylate amines and alcohols readily under mild, controlled conditions, but its structure — an ester of chloroformic acid rather than a true acid chloride of a carboxylic acid — makes the reagent somewhat gentler and more selective in many applications than the more aggressive acid chlorides elsewhere in this group. That balance of reactivity and controllability is what has made it a long-standing, go-to reagent for introducing a carbamate (ethoxycarbonyl) protecting group onto an amine, and for forming mixed anhydrides as activated intermediates in peptide and amide-coupling chemistry.
At room temperature it is a colourless to pale yellow liquid, flammable and fuming slightly in moist air, with a sharp, irritating odour. It reacts with water, though generally less violently than thionyl chloride or chloroacetyl chloride, hydrolysing over time to release carbon dioxide, hydrogen chloride and ethanol.
Where it fits in the value chain
Ethyl Chloroformate's largest use is in pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis as a carbamate-forming and mixed-anhydride-forming reagent: reacting it with an amine installs an ethoxycarbonyl protecting group that can later be removed under defined conditions, while reacting it with a carboxylic acid in the presence of a base forms a mixed anhydride that is itself a mild, selective acylating agent for a subsequent amide-coupling step, a technique widely used in peptide and amide synthesis before more specialised coupling reagents became common. It is also used to introduce ethyl ester groups in various specialty organic syntheses and as a laboratory derivatising reagent in certain analytical procedures.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers Ethyl Chloroformate in technical grade for general industrial acylation chemistry and pharmaceutical-intermediate grade, with tighter colour and purity limits, for API and fine-chemical synthesis. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis.
How Ethyl Chloroformate is produced
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Ethyl Chloroformate is produced by reacting ethanol with phosgene (carbonyl chloride) under controlled conditions, typically at low temperature with careful stoichiometric control, which substitutes one of phosgene's two chlorine atoms with an ethoxy group, giving the chloroformate ester directly while releasing hydrogen chloride. Controlling the reaction to stop cleanly at the mono-substituted chloroformate, rather than going on to the fully substituted diethyl carbonate, is the main selectivity challenge in the route, managed by the ethanol-to-phosgene ratio and by reaction temperature.
Because the process uses phosgene as a starting material, a highly toxic and tightly regulated intermediate in its own right, the reaction is run under strict containment and scrubbing controls at the manufacturing site, with phosgene generated, consumed and never isolated as a stored intermediate at the point of reaction. The crude product is purified by distillation to reach the colour and assay specification required of pharmaceutical-intermediate grade.
Industries and processes that use it
Ethyl Chloroformate is consumed across pharmaceutical carbamate/mixed-anhydride chemistry, peptide and amide coupling, and specialty esterification. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Carbamate Protecting-Group Chemistry
Reacted with an amine to install an ethoxycarbonyl (carbamate) protecting group, used during multi-step pharmaceutical and fine-chemical synthesis to mask amine reactivity temporarily.
Mixed-Anhydride Peptide/Amide Coupling
Reacted with a carboxylic acid in the presence of a base to form a mixed anhydride, a mild, selective activated intermediate used in peptide and amide-coupling synthesis.
Ethyl Ester Introduction
Used to introduce an ethoxycarbonyl or ethyl ester group in various specialty organic syntheses beyond peptide chemistry.
Analytical Derivatisation Reagent
Used in certain laboratory analytical procedures as a derivatising reagent, converting target analytes to a more readily detected form.
How the reagent is typically used forward
The chloroformate ester's moderated, controllable reactivity governs almost all of Ethyl Chloroformate's further use. The categories below account for most of the ways it is applied in downstream synthesis.
Carbamate Formation
Reacted with a primary or secondary amine, typically in the presence of a mild base to scavenge the released hydrogen chloride, to install an ethoxycarbonyl protecting group on the nitrogen.
Mixed Anhydride Formation
Reacted with a carboxylic acid and a tertiary amine base to form a mixed carbonic-carboxylic anhydride, an activated intermediate that then reacts selectively with an amine nucleophile to form the desired amide bond.
Ester Formation
Reacted with an alcohol under base catalysis to form a mixed carbonate ester, a less common but occasionally useful transformation in specialty synthesis.
Analytical Derivatisation
Reacted with a target analyte bearing an amine or hydroxyl group under standardised laboratory conditions to form a derivative with improved detection characteristics for analytical methods.

Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Highly flammable liquid and vapour.
Causes severe skin burns and eye damage.
Toxic if inhaled.
Irritating and tear-inducing vapour, similar to other chloroformate esters.
Chemical-resistant gloves, respiratory protection and acid-resistant clothing are required for routine handling.
Keep away from heat, sparks and open flame given its low flash point.
Danger
This product is highly flammable, causes severe skin burns and eye damage on contact, and is toxic if inhaled; its vapour is also irritating and tear-inducing. Handling requires chemical-resistant gloves, respiratory protection, acid-resistant clothing, ignition-source control given its low flash point, and work in a fume hood or otherwise well-ventilated area. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and must be read in full before this material is handled.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in tightly sealed, moisture-excluding containers in a cool, dry area, away from heat sources, sparks and ignition sources given its flammability, and away from amines and other nucleophiles that react directly with the chloroformate group. Any container showing signs of pressure build-up should be treated with particular caution and isolated rather than opened under uncontrolled conditions. Re-check assay on a batch held past its retest date before use.
