Gelatin (Pharma Grade)
The pharmaceutical-grade Gelatin supplied by Chelora Chemicals — a hydrolysed-collagen excipient at the core of hard and soft capsule shells — exported from Indonesia as fine granule or powder with full batch documentation on every shipment.
What Pharma-Grade Gelatin is, and why buyers source it
A working overview of the material's collagen-derived chemistry, why Bloom strength governs grade selection, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.
Gelatin is not a single defined molecule but a hydrolysed form of collagen, the fibrous structural protein that makes up skin, bone and connective tissue in animals; partial hydrolysis breaks the long, triple-helical collagen structure down into shorter protein chains that, unlike collagen itself, dissolve in warm water and then reform a thermoreversible gel on cooling — melting again when warmed, setting again when cooled, a cycle that can be repeated and is the entire basis of gelatin's usefulness. Bloom strength, a standardised measure of gel rigidity, is the single most important grade-differentiating specification: a higher Bloom value gives a firmer, more rigid gel at a given concentration, and pharmaceutical capsule-shell manufacture specifies a particular Bloom range to achieve the shell thickness, dissolution behaviour and mechanical handling properties each capsule type requires.
As supplied, pharmaceutical-grade gelatin is a pale yellow to amber, essentially odourless granule or powder. Because it is sourced from animal connective tissue, every batch carries full traceability documentation back to source and processing method, a requirement that matters considerably more for pharmaceutical gelatin than for the food-grade material used in confectionery and other general applications.
Where it fits in the value chain
Pharmaceutical-grade gelatin's largest use by far is as the shell-forming material for both hard (two-piece) and soft (one-piece, softgel) capsules, the dosage form chosen for a very large share of oral solid pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products. A separate pharmaceutical use is as a binder and coating agent in tablet manufacture, and as a stabiliser and suspending agent in certain liquid and injectable formulations. Food- and nutraceutical-grade material, differentiated mainly by its less stringent sourcing and testing regime, is used across confectionery, dairy and functional-food applications, though our pharma-grade product line is positioned specifically for capsule and tablet manufacture.
Grades we supply
Chelora Chemicals offers pharmaceutical-grade Gelatin meeting USP/EP pharmacopoeial specifications, across a range of Bloom strengths suited to hard-capsule, soft-capsule and tablet-binder applications. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering Bloom strength, viscosity, moisture content and microbial limits.
How Pharma-Grade Gelatin is produced
An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.
Gelatin is produced by controlled hydrolysis of collagen extracted from bovine or porcine bone and hide, using one of two broad pre-treatment routes. The acid process (giving Type A gelatin, typically from porcine skin) soaks the raw collagen material in dilute acid for a comparatively short conditioning period before hot-water extraction; the alkaline (liming) process (giving Type B gelatin, typically from bovine hide and bone) soaks the material in lime for a much longer conditioning period, which more thoroughly breaks down certain collagen crosslinks before extraction. Either way, the conditioned collagen is then extracted with hot water in a series of progressively hotter batches, each giving a slightly different Bloom strength and viscosity, which are blended to hit the buyer's specified grade.
The extracted gelatin solution is filtered, concentrated, sterilised and dried, typically by extrusion through a die followed by controlled drying, to give the final granule or powder form. Pharmaceutical-grade material undergoes additional processing and testing steps, including viral-inactivation validation and tighter microbial and heavy-metal control, beyond what food-grade material requires, reflecting its intended use in a dosage form taken internally.
Industries and processes that use it
Pharma-grade Gelatin is consumed predominantly by capsule-shell manufacture, with further use in tablet binding and liquid formulation stabilisation. The fields below account for most of the demand we see through our export desk.
Hard (Two-Piece) Capsule Shells
Formed into the rigid, snap-fit two-piece shells used for powder- and pellet-filled oral pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products, the single largest pharma-grade gelatin application.
Soft (Softgel) Capsule Shells
Formed into the one-piece, sealed shells used for liquid- and oil-filled softgel capsules, a dosage form widely used for vitamins, fish oil and liquid-fill pharmaceutical actives.
Tablet Binder & Coating
Used as a binder in tablet granulation and as a film-forming coating agent in certain tablet-coating formulations.
Liquid Formulation Stabiliser
Used as a stabiliser, suspending agent and viscosity modifier in certain liquid and injectable pharmaceutical formulations.
How the material is typically converted forward
The thermoreversible gel behaviour governs almost all of Gelatin's further processing behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished dosage form.
Hard Capsule Shell Moulding
A warm gelatin solution is dipped onto temperature-controlled pins, dried in a controlled-humidity environment to set the gel and lose moisture, then stripped from the pins and joined into the familiar two-piece capsule shape.
Soft Capsule (Softgel) Encapsulation
A warm gelatin ribbon is formed between two rotating dies, with the liquid or oil fill metered in simultaneously, sealing the capsule and cutting it from the ribbon in a single continuous rotary-die process.
Tablet Granulation Binding
Dissolved and sprayed onto powder blends during wet granulation, where it binds individual particles together into granules suited to tablet compression.
Coating Film Formation
Dissolved and applied as a thin coating film onto tablet cores, drying to form a protective or taste-masking surface layer.
Gelatin against a related pharmaceutical excipient we supply
Buyers sourcing pharmaceutical-grade Gelatin for capsule manufacture sometimes also need a related nutritional or pharmaceutical ingredient for their finished formulation. A quick reference to what else is on our regular supply list.

Exact physical constants and purity specifications are confirmed per batch on the certificate of analysis — treat the notes above as a sourcing guide, not a specification sheet, for products other than Gelatin.
Safety classification at a glance
Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.
Not classified as hazardous under GHS; a food/pharmaceutical-grade natural protein material.
Supplied to pharmacopoeial microbial limits; standard good-hygiene handling practice applies rather than a chemical hazard precaution.
Combustible in dry powder/granule form like most organic solids; store away from open flame.
Animal-derived (bovine/porcine); source should be confirmed against the buyer's own allergen, religious or dietary requirements.
Standard gloves and good hygiene practice are sufficient for routine handling.
Minimise airborne dust during milling and packing, as a standard good-practice measure for any fine powder.
Not classified; refer to the batch certificate of analysis and MSDS for full detail.
This product has a low hazard profile and is not classified as hazardous under GHS; it is a natural, food/pharmaceutical-grade protein material handled under standard good-hygiene practice rather than chemical-hazard precautions. Buyers with specific allergen, religious (halal/kosher) or dietary requirements should confirm source (bovine vs. porcine) and certification status with our desk before ordering. Full handling and storage guidance is in the technical data sheet and MSDS issued with every shipment.
Keeping it on spec between delivery and use
General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.
Store in a cool, dry area below 25 °C in sealed moisture-barrier packaging, since gelatin is hygroscopic and both excess moisture pickup and high storage temperature can degrade Bloom strength over time. Keep away from strong odours, since the material can absorb ambient odours that would then carry into the finished capsule or tablet. Re-check Bloom strength, viscosity and moisture content on a batch held past its retest date before use.
