01 / PRODUCT DOSSIER

What PET Resin is, and why buyers source it

A working overview of the resin's polyester chemistry, how intrinsic viscosity governs its end use, and the grades Chelora Chemicals keeps in regular supply.

PET is a semi-crystalline polyester formed by condensing a diacid (or its dimethyl ester) with ethylene glycol, producing a repeating ester linkage along the backbone that gives the polymer both strength and, importantly, an excellent gas-barrier property against oxygen and carbon dioxide — the single property that has made it the dominant resin for carbonated beverage bottles. Its degree of crystallinity, controlled during processing rather than fixed by the resin itself, determines whether a given part is clear and glassy (low crystallinity, as in a blow-moulded bottle) or opaque and stiffer (higher crystallinity, as in some engineering and fibre applications).

At room temperature it is supplied as a clear to semi-opaque crystalline pellet or chip. Because it is strongly hygroscopic and undergoes hydrolytic degradation (chain scission by reaction with absorbed moisture) at melt-processing temperature, it must be thoroughly dried immediately before processing — a handling requirement distinct from almost every other resin in this catalogue.

Where it fits in the value chain

Bottle-grade PET, at a moderate intrinsic viscosity, is stretch-blow-moulded into carbonated soft drink, water and food bottles, exploiting its clarity, barrier properties and recyclability. Fibre-grade PET, at a lower intrinsic viscosity, is melt-spun into polyester fibre for textiles and nonwovens — one of the highest-volume synthetic fibres in the world. Film and sheet grades are biaxially oriented into packaging film, photographic and industrial film base, and electrical insulation tape. A separate family of higher-performance engineering PET grades, often glass-reinforced, is injection-moulded into electrical connectors and automotive under-the-hood parts.

Grades we supply

Chelora Chemicals offers PET across bottle, fibre, film/sheet and engineering intrinsic-viscosity ranges. Each grade is supplied with a batch-wise certificate of analysis covering intrinsic viscosity, moisture content and acetaldehyde level (for bottle-grade material).

02 / MANUFACTURING ROUTE

How PET Resin is produced

An overview of the production route for orientation purposes. Our manufacturing partners' own process parameters and in-process controls are proprietary and are not disclosed beyond what is needed to interpret the certificate of analysis.

PET is produced by one of two condensation routes, both ending in the same polymer. The direct esterification route reacts purified terephthalic acid directly with ethylene glycol under heat, releasing water as the by-product and building up an oligomer that is then polycondensed under vacuum at high temperature, with excess glycol removed, to build the final molecular weight. The older transesterification route instead starts from dimethyl terephthalate, reacted with ethylene glycol to release methanol rather than water, before the same final polycondensation step builds up molecular weight; direct esterification using purified terephthalic acid is now the dominant commercial route worldwide.

The polycondensation step's final stage, solid-state polymerisation, is used for higher-intrinsic-viscosity bottle-grade resin: after initial melt polymerisation, the still-solid pellets are heated under vacuum or inert gas below their melting point for an extended period, allowing molecular weight to build further without the side reactions that would occur if the same build-up were attempted in the melt. A catalyst, most commonly an antimony compound, is used throughout to accelerate the polycondensation reaction.

04 / REACTION CHEMISTRY

How the resin is typically converted forward

The resin's hygroscopic nature and controllable crystallinity govern almost all of PET's further processing behaviour. The categories below account for most of the ways it is converted into a finished part.

Drying

The hygroscopic resin is dried to a very low residual moisture level immediately before melt processing to prevent hydrolytic chain scission at processing temperature, an essential first step for every conversion route.

Injection Stretch-Blow Moulding

A preform is injection-moulded, then reheated and biaxially stretched and blown inside a bottle mould, which orients the polymer chains and induces the strain-hardening that gives finished bottles their strength and clarity.

Fibre Spinning

Melted resin is extruded through fine spinnerets and drawn to orient the polymer chains, producing continuous filament or staple fibre for textile use.

Biaxial Film Orientation

Cast film is stretched in both the machine and transverse directions at a controlled temperature, aligning the polymer structure to give high-strength, dimensionally stable oriented film.

06 / HAZARD & HANDLING

Safety classification at a glance

Based on GHS classification as commonly listed for this substance. This is a summary for orientation only — always work from the current safety data sheet supplied with your specific batch.

Low Hazard Profile

Not classified as hazardous under GHS in solid pellet/chip form.

Combustible Solid

Combustible; pellets and especially fine dust can support combustion once ignited.

Dust Control

Minimise accumulation of polymer dust/fines, which present a greater ignition risk than pellets.

Molten Handling

Processing equipment handles the resin molten; standard hot-surface and fume-extraction precautions apply at the extruder.

PPE Standard

Standard gloves and eye protection are sufficient for routine handling of pellets.

Moisture Sensitivity

Not a safety hazard, but a critical process-quality factor; always dry before processing per the technical data sheet.

Signal word

Not classified; refer to the batch MSDS for grade-specific guidance.

This product has a low hazard profile in its solid pellet or chip form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The principal handling precautions concern combustible-dust accumulation from fines generated during conveying and bagging, and standard hot-surface precautions during melt processing. Full first-aid, storage, spill and PPE guidance is in the MSDS issued with every shipment, and should be read in full before this material is handled.

07 / STORAGE & SHELF LIFE

Keeping it on spec between delivery and use

General storage guidance for this grade. Site-specific storage rules, segregation requirements and re-test intervals should follow your own EHS procedures and the MSDS issued with your batch.

Storage TemperatureAmbient, dry, indoor
ContainerMoisture-barrier bags / 1,000 kg jumbo bags
Typical Shelf Life24 months, unopened, moisture-barrier packaging
Keep Away FromMoisture ingress, heat sources
Beyond Shelf LifeAlways re-dry before processing

Store in a dry, ambient-temperature warehouse in the original moisture-barrier packaging, since PET is strongly hygroscopic and will absorb atmospheric moisture through standard polyethylene bags over time. Keep bags sealed until immediately before processing, and always pre-dry per the technical data sheet regardless of how recently the material was delivered, since even a few hours of exposure to humid air can raise moisture content enough to affect finished-part properties. Re-check intrinsic viscosity on material held past its retest date before use.

10 / FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What buyers most often ask our sales desk about this grade.

01What is PET Resin used for?+
Predominantly beverage and food bottles (bottle grade), polyester fibre and textiles (fibre grade), packaging and industrial film (film/sheet grade), and electrical connectors and automotive parts (glass-reinforced engineering grade).
02What does PET stand for and what is it made from?+
PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate, a polyester formed by condensing a diacid — purified terephthalic acid or, via the older route, dimethyl terephthalate — with ethylene glycol, releasing water or methanol respectively as the reaction proceeds.
03How is PET Resin produced?+
By direct esterification of purified terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol (the dominant route) or transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol, followed by melt polycondensation and, for bottle-grade resin, a further solid-state polymerisation step to build intrinsic viscosity.
04What grades does Chelora Chemicals supply?+
We supply bottle, fibre, film/sheet and engineering (glass-reinforced) grades across standard intrinsic-viscosity ranges. Each grade ships with a certificate of analysis covering intrinsic viscosity, moisture content and, for bottle grade, acetaldehyde level.
05Is PET Resin hazardous?+
No; it has a low hazard profile in solid pellet or chip form and is not classified as hazardous under GHS. The main handling precaution is combustible-dust control from fines generated during conveying, plus the process-quality (not safety) requirement to dry the resin before melt processing.
06Why must PET always be dried before processing?+
Because the ester linkages that make up its backbone can be broken apart (hydrolysed) by water at melt-processing temperature, and PET is strongly hygroscopic, absorbing atmospheric moisture readily even through standard packaging — so any residual moisture above the specified limit causes a measurable, irreversible drop in molecular weight and mechanical properties during the very process that turns the resin into a finished part, making pre-drying a mandatory rather than optional step.
07What packing options are available?+
Standard packing is 25 kg moisture-barrier bags on pallet, with 1,000 kg jumbo bags or bulk hopper truck shipment available for larger volumes.
08How long does delivery take?+
Typical lead time is two to three weeks plus transit, depending on whether the grade is ex-stock or made to order and your destination port. A firm date is confirmed in the written quotation.
09Can I get a sample before placing a bulk order?+
Yes. Pre-shipment samples and a batch certificate of analysis can be arranged so your QC team can verify the specification before committing to volume.
10Do you supply the diacid feedstocks as well?+
Yes, we supply both Purified Terephthalic Acid and Dimethyl Terephthalate, the two alternate diacid/diester feedstocks this resin is condensed from.
